It’s not just today that I Love To Write
In this blog, Laura talks about her journey as a writer, who inspires her, and why she truly loves to write…
Today, 15th November, is I Love To Write Day, but it is not just today that I love to write.
From a young age I knew I wanted to be a journalist. Aged 15 I decided to set up my own work experience in the Big Smoke and after two weeks at a teenage magazine – in which I met some celebrities, took part in a photoshoot and lunched in Covent Garden – it is safe to say, I was sold on being a reporter.
At university I honed my craft under the great Jonathan Foster, who previously worked for The Independent and The Observer, and of whom I was, and still am, in awe.
Being able to write like him was always the dream.
I learned shorthand, news reporting and colour writing and I started from the bottom, where every journalist should begin.
I was employed as a trainee reporter and worked my way up to senior reporter, then chief reporter before moving across to “the dark side” of PR.
But I’ll let you in to a little secret. There’s actually nothing dark about PR. It’s a fantastic opportunity to shout about all the good in the world and use words to create a narrative to influence someone’s perception of something.
Words are powerful and should be chosen carefully, which is probably why my love to write goes hand in hand with me being a terrible overthinker. But the correct word choice can make a huge difference as to how a piece of writing lands with the reader.
Words can change how somebody feels, and strung together cleverly, potentially even influence what they think.
But the best part of being a writer, for me, has always been the story telling. I find great joy in talking to people, discovering their story and then doing it justice in print.
I love a human-interest story, about someone’s life and their experiences, but I’m just as content writing about scenery or events. I’m also the one that everyone comes to for a Hallmark-style ditty for a group card or gift.
I also love that my love of writing allows me to write for a living. As they say if you enjoy your job, you don’t do a day of work in your life.
Writing brings me joy and a great sense of accomplishment when I see the difference it can make, and I would urge you to consider writing for pleasure if you haven’t done so before.
Today, on I Love To Write Day, is the perfect day to give it a go. Why not write someone a letter and see the joy you bring with your words or write a verse to include in a loved one’s card.
Perhaps write a poem about your favourite memory or write your own life story in your own words.
I promise you won’t regret it.
